The Programming Differences That Actually Matter

The clearest practical difference between hypertrophy and strength training shows up in four variables: rep ranges, load intensity, rest periods, and total volume.

  • Hypertrophy typically uses 6–12 reps per set at 65–80% of a one-rep maximum, with shorter rest periods (60–90 seconds) to maintain metabolic stress. Total weekly volume — the number of sets per muscle group — tends to be higher.
