The Body's Many Uses for Protein

  • Structural support: Collagen — the most abundant protein in the body — forms the framework for skin, bones, cartilage, and connective tissue. Without adequate protein, these structures weaken over time.
  • Immune defense: Antibodies, the proteins your immune system uses to identify and neutralize foreign invaders, are made entirely from amino acids. Low protein intake can blunt your immune response.

Where Protein Comes From

Both animal and plant foods supply protein, though they differ in their amino acid profiles.

Animal sources — such as meat, poultry, fish, eggs, and dairy — are considered "complete" proteins because they contain all nine essential amino acids in proportions the body can readily use.

Plant sources — including beans, lentils, tofu, tempeh, nuts, seeds, and whole grains — vary in their amino acid content. Most plant proteins are lower in one or more essential amino acids, but eating a wide variety throughout the day allows the body to access the full spectrum it needs.
