What Is DOMS?
Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness — commonly abbreviated as DOMS — is the muscular ache, stiffness, or tenderness that typically develops 12 to 72 hours after exercise, particularly after activities your body isn't used to. Unlike the immediate burning sensation during a tough set, DOMS arrives later and can feel like deep-tissue tenderness when you move or press on the affected area.

Why Does DOMS Happen?
Exercise — especially movements that involve eccentric muscle contractions (the lengthening phase, such as lowering a dumbbell or walking downhill) — creates microscopic disruptions in muscle fibers. This is a normal mechanical stress, not damage in the clinical sense.
In response, the body triggers an inflammatory process: blood flow increases, fluid enters the tissue, and repair cells get to work rebuilding those fibers slightly stronger than before. That localized inflammation and swelling is what creates the characteristic soreness, tightness, and temporary loss of strength you feel in the days following a hard session.
