What Is Type 2 Diabetes?

Type 2 diabetes is a chronic condition in which the body struggles to regulate blood sugar (glucose) properly. Glucose is the primary fuel your cells use for energy, and the hormone insulin — produced by the pancreas — acts like a key, helping glucose move from the bloodstream into cells. In type 2 diabetes, cells stop responding to insulin as they should, a problem called insulin resistance. Over time, the pancreas may also produce less insulin, causing blood sugar to remain persistently elevated.

How the Condition Develops

Type 2 diabetes typically develops gradually over years. Early on, the pancreas compensates for insulin resistance by producing more insulin. Eventually, this compensation breaks down and blood sugar levels begin to rise above healthy ranges. A middle stage — called prediabetes — often precedes a formal diagnosis, during which blood sugar is elevated but not yet at diabetic levels.

Several factors raise the likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes, including excess body weight (particularly around the abdomen), physical inactivity, a family history of the condition, age over 45, and a history of gestational diabetes. Certain ethnic groups, including Black, Hispanic, Native American, and Asian American populations, also face higher prevalence rates. Medications
Several classes of medication help lower blood sugar through different mechanisms. Metformin is often a first-line oral medication, but many others exist. Your doctor will determine what is appropriate based on your HbA1c, kidney function, and other factors.

  • Cardiovascular disease — People with type 2 diabetes have a higher risk of heart disease and stroke.
  • Diabetic kidney disease (nephropathy) — Elevated blood sugar can gradually impair kidney function.
  • Diabetic retinopathy — Damage to small blood vessels in the eye can affect vision.
  • Peripheral neuropathy — Nerve damage, often felt as tingling or numbness in the feet and hands.

None of these complications are inevitable. Regular screenings — including annual eye exams, kidney function tests, and foot examinations — exist precisely to catch early warning signs before they progress. Staying engaged with your care team is among the most protective steps you can take.
