What Are Dietary Minerals?
Minerals are naturally occurring inorganic elements — meaning they come from the earth, not from living organisms — that your body needs to carry out thousands of daily functions. Unlike carbohydrates or fats, your body cannot produce minerals on its own. They must come from the foods you eat and the water you drink.

Electrolyte

- Magnesium — Involved in over 300 enzymatic reactions, including energy production, DNA synthesis, and muscle relaxation. Nuts, seeds, legumes, whole grains, and dark leafy vegetables are good dietary sources.
- Phosphorus — Works alongside calcium to build and maintain bones and teeth, and plays a central role in how the body stores and uses energy. It is found in protein-rich foods such as meat, poultry, fish, eggs, and dairy.
- Potassium — An electrolyte that helps regulate fluid balance, supports normal blood pressure, and enables proper nerve and muscle function. Bananas, potatoes, beans, and avocados are well-known sources.
- Sodium — Another electrolyte essential for fluid balance, nerve transmission, and muscle contractions. Most Americans consume more sodium than recommended; the primary source is processed and restaurant foods rather than whole foods.
- Chloride and Sulfur — Chloride works with sodium to maintain fluid balance and is a component of stomach acid. Sulfur is found in proteins and supports liver detoxification pathways.

Eating vitamin C-rich foods — such as bell peppers, citrus, or tomatoes — alongside iron-rich plant foods like spinach or lentils can significantly improve how much non-heme iron your body absorbs. - Don't overlook nuts and seeds — small portions of almonds, pumpkin seeds, or sunflower seeds provide concentrated amounts of magnesium, zinc, and manganese.
- Choose whole grains over refined ones — whole wheat, oats, and brown rice retain the mineral-rich bran and germ layers stripped away during refining.
